Motivation Gone Missing? Here Are 7 Ways to Get it Back

There are days when the snooze button wins over your workout and the cupcake wins over the apple. It happens—for many reasons. It’s quite possible the cause is that your motivation has gone missing.

Relying on motivation, a fickle friend at best, to get you up and working out or reaching for fruit instead of sweets can backfire. It just isn’t always there when you need it. But, as fickle as it is, we all like it when motivation comes around.

If your motivation is waning, it is possible to recharge it. Here are seven ways to get back your drive and enthusiasm.

Reflect on your “why” and your vision statement. Looking back on why you started down the path of a fit and healthy lifestyle is a powerful way to boost your motivation. If you’ve completed the FLO/50 goal coaching “why” and vision statement exercises, reread both to see and feel your future fitter and healthier self.

Refocus your goals. Review the goals you’ve set for yourself. Are they still working for you? Great! Imagine how it will feel when you reach them. If your motivation is waning because your goals are too difficult or not challenging enough, take time to adjust them.

Reach out to your accountability partner. Talk frankly about why you feel demotivated and then your accountability partner can either cheer you on or give you a figurative kick in the butt to get you back on track.

Rethink where you can build habits. Building and cementing key elements of your fit and healthy lifestyleinto your daily routines as habits can take the need for motivation out of the equation in many instances.

Rev up your routine. Are your workouts or meals feeling a bit bland? Throw in something new to shake things up. Perhaps add a different set of exercises into the mix or whip up a new recipe.

Refresh your perspective. Take time to think about all the things in your fit and healthy lifestyle that you’re grateful for; for example, how you feel, the support from family and friends, what you’ve achieved so far.

Recharge yourself. Sometimes you just need a day or two to lie around and eat cake. (Just don’t get carried away.)
